Foreclosure and Eviction Fighter Profile: Alice Smith

Alice Smith is a foster care mother of five special needs children, all under the age of 4 years old. If PennyMac evicts her, the children will be displaced and most likely be placed into an emergency care facility, not a home. She has cared for these children for most of their lives. They have been removed from homes that were unstable and evicting them would negatively impact their lives.

Alice lost income first when her Vietnam veteran husband cut off all contact rather than obtaining VA benefits to get treatment for PTSD and to support the family. Retirement from work outside of the home and drastic cuts in funding for foster care further diminished Alice’s income, but she didn’t want to give up the foster children in her care, so she forged ahead. Her income has recovered enough at this point to make regular payments on a fair deal mortgage loan.

Alice is currently working with Nancy Pelosi’s office, ACCE, and Occupy Bernal to reverse the foreclosure with Citigroup / PennyMac and to obtain a fair deal loan modification so she and her five foster children can remain in their home.
